An overview study of relations between the USA and the USSR from 1943 to 1991. It is important students can recall correct information, organise events into chronological order and explain the cause and effect of events through this time.
As an overview study of a 50 year period, it is good to revise by creating timelines, flash cards, and mind maps.

Unit 3: Transformation of British Society 1931 to 1951
The exam is 1 hour and 15 minutes long. There are 5 questions to answer in this time for a total of 50 marks.
Students are still studying this topic and are developing their knowledge of how to answer the different exam questions. Information is included in the revision guide attached here, and the revision book offers useful advice.
Q1 6 marks Making inferences from ONE source
Q2 8marks Considering the purpose of ONE source
Q3 10 marks Explaining causation using a source and own knowledge
Q4 10 marks Evaluating the utility or reliability of TWO sources
Q5 20 marks Evaluating a hypothesis using all sources

Unit 1 The Making of the Modern World: Peace and War: International Relations
Advice on all exams is being handed out to students and is attached here.
Students must not answer questions in Section 1 to 3 of the exam. They should answer Sections 4, 5 and 6 only.
Section 4 - How did the the Cold War Develop 1943 to 1956
Section 5 - Three Cold War Crises - 1957 to 1969
Section 6 - Why did the Cold War End? 1979 to 1991
Each section should take around 25 minutes and includes 3 questions.
Question a) 2 marks - a description of a specific event e.g. Describe ONE cause of the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956. This requires one idea with accurate supporting detail for full marks.
Question b) 6 marks - A brief explanation of an event e.g. Briefly explain the key features of the Warsaw Pact, 1955. This requires 3 ideas, with some accurate supporting detail for full marks.
Question c) 12 marks - a longer explanation of relations over a period of time e.g. Explain why relations between the USA and the USSR changed in the years 1983 to 1987. 3 paragraphs to explain 3 events with accurate supporting detail, and a conclusion on the most important reason.

Examples of all questions and advice on how to answer them is being handed out to students and is attached here.
1 a is worth 4 marks (6 minutes) - inferring from a source.
1 b is worth 6 marks (8 minutes) - describing an event.
1 c is worth 8 marks (12 minutes) - explain effects or consequences.
1 d is worth 8 marks (12 minutes) - explain why something happened.
2 a OR 2 b is worth 8 marks (12 minutes) - 3 additional marks for SPaG
3 a OR 3 b is worth 20 marks (25 minutes) - give a judgement on why something happened or the effects of something. 4 additional marks for SPaG.
