Dear Parents and Carers
In June I wrote about the school's pledge to reduce the use of single-use plastics in the school. The JLT (Junior Leadership Team), who organise student fundraising at the school, asked me if I would like to nominate a cause for the final non-uniform collection I suggested the money raised should be used to help the school fund more drinks dispensers for filling water bottles. On Friday 12 July the non-uniform collection raised just over £1,800 which is really impressive given we only had four year groups in school. The school community has shown great generosity in supporting the school once again.
Over the summer weeks we hope to install a water dispenser in the Sports Hall and continue to raise funds to install more across the school. In particular we are committed to finding ways to install the equipment needed in the canteen to refill bottles with water or other drinks with the ultimate aim of replacing all the plastic bottles currently on sale by the end of the next academic year. These initiatives are part of an ongoing commitment to removing the amount of non-recyclable waste and being plastic free in the canteen by 2020. In response to concerns raised by students the canteen has introduced containers that use corn starch not plastic and are also moving to paper bags.
We will also be giving re-usable Stringer water bottles to all the Year 7 in September, and are looking for sponsorship so we can do the same for all students. We will sell re-usable water bottles in the school shop at cost price.
We have had conversations with local councillors and are exploring ways in which the Local Authority may be able to support us with our aim to be plastic free
So, for the last time as Headteacher, I am writing to thank you for all your support in my time at Dorothy Stringer School. As my last day at Stringer approaches I have become very aware of how much I will miss the school. The last eight years have been very happy and rewarding years for me. As I said a few months ago I am extremely proud of the school and of all the students who have been with us during my time here. I consider myself to have been very fortunate to finish my teaching career in a school where I have been so happy.
Dorothy Stringer is a special place because of the students, parents and carers, and staff that make up the community.
I have been overwhelmed by the positive support I received from parents over my years at Stringer. So many of you have contacted me or talked me over the last few days and weeks. I have been touched by your words – and truly thank you for your kindness.
I hope you have a lovely and peaceful summer and find time to relax and spend time with family and friends.
