Weekly News update: Friday 11 October 2019

This week we had our annual Open Evening and as usual it was extremely well attended. I am hugely grateful for those students who gave up their evening to showcase the school and speak so eloquently about what makes Stringer so special.

Today has been a very wet day and it doesn't seem like it's going to improve over the weekend. With this in mind please can I reiterate that hooded tops are not uniform and students need a coat that will keep them dry and warm over the winter months. Also, hooded tops should not to be worn instead of a school jumper and they will be confiscated if worn in this way. Thank you to the vast majority who do wear the uniform well, it means our focus can be on high quality teaching and learning.

World Mental Health Week

As a school we have been promoting positive mental and emotional health messages in tutor groups and around the school. These are part of a national campaign that encourages both students and staff to, 'take a whole hour for yourself and do something to feel good'.

During this week we are also pleased to announce the first lunch time drop-in information session our mental health Champions have provided. See the SLG Newsletter for more information.

General Knowledge Quiz

The school's annual General Knowledge Quiz takes place in the main hall at lunch-time on Friday 18 October.

Students can just turn up and attempt to answer general knowledge questions and identify some famous faces.

There are prizes for the top scores in each year group so younger students are not disadvantaged. The highest scoring students are then invited to enter into the 'Mastermind' quiz to face it off head-to-head including questions on their 'Specialist Subject'.

Everyone is welcome!

DEAR

We will be holding our first DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) week of this academic year from Monday 14 to Friday 18 October. During the week the whole school will stop what they are doing, pick up a book, and read for 20 minutes every day.

Carol Service

Believe it or not the music department have already started rehearsing for the Carol Service which will take place on 19 December. It's a fantastic event and a lovely way to start the festive season. Students and staff are all welcome to join the choir; KS3 students' rehearsals are on Wednesday lunchtimes from 12.10 to 12.50 and KS4s rehearsals are on Friday lunchtimes from 12.30 to 1.15.

Mock Exam Timetable

The mock exam timetable has been published on the SLG. Further revision information will be provided by departments.

Brighton and Hove Schools District Football Association

On Wednesday 9 October, Dorothy Stringer hosted a 5-a-side football tournament on the astro pitch with 194 players participating. Congratulations to our girls' team who won the Seltzer Shield; they will represent the district in the regional finals in London in the New Year.
